Elon Musk is planning to invest $1 billion in a science institute in Dubai, according to his father, Errol Musk. Speaking to Arabian Business during a visit to the UAE, Errol revealed that the project, named ‘The Musk Institute,’ will focus on cutting-edge research in areas like gravity and nuclear fusion while addressing the global “brain drain” by retaining top talent in the region.

“Dubai is central to the world, and we wanted to build an academy of science to retain the greatest and craziest minds, giving them a chance,” Errol Musk told Arabian Business.

The idea for the institute has been in discussion between Elon and his father since the launch of SpaceX in 2001, but plans have accelerated in recent years. “When I discussed it with Elon, he said, ‘We must do it now, or somebody else will do it,’” Errol shared. Construction is expected to begin in 2025, and the institute will be fully funded by Elon Musk’s fortune, which currently stands at over $460 billion.

The facility is envisioned as a three-story, state-of-the-art hub with accommodations for students and researchers. In true Musk fashion, it will include a quirky addition: a burger-dispensing machine. Beyond the physical infrastructure, Errol hinted at even grander ambitions, including creating a “Musk Prize,” an accolade intended to rival the prestige of the Nobel Prize.

During his visit, Errol also met with senior UAE government officials to discuss potential locations for the project, which aligns with Dubai’s goal of positioning itself as a global hub for innovation.

“The brain drain is astronomical—it’s a big problem,” Errol said, emphasizing how the institute aims to reverse this trend by fostering local talent.

With construction slated to start in 2025, the Musk Institute represents a scientific endeavour and a larger ambition to cement Dubai’s reputation as a centre for global innovation.
