Elon Musk’s Boring Company is partnering with Dubai to develop the Dubai Loop, an underground transportation network designed to connect the city’s most densely populated areas. Musk, speaking via video link at the World Government Summit in Dubai, described the system as a ‘wormhole’ that allows rapid transit across the city.
Under an MoU signed between RTA and The Boring Company, Dubai will explore the development of the 17-kilometre project. With 11 stations and a capacity to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour.
The Dubai Loop aims to alleviate traffic congestion by providing a high-speed underground alternative to traditional roadways. Musk emphasised the advantages of subterranean travel over aerial options like flying cars or helicopters, noting that tunnels are unaffected by weather conditions and avoid issues related to noise and safety.
“So it’s gonna be great. It’s gonna be like a wormhole, like, you know, you just worm hole from one part of the city boom, and you’re out another part of the city. And it’s great,” said Musk.
This initiative builds upon the Boring Company’s previous projects, such as the Las Vegas Loop, which connects key destinations in Las Vegas through underground tunnels. While specific details about the Dubai Loop’s implementation timeline and technical specifications have not been disclosed, the collaboration signifies a significant step toward innovative urban transportation solutions in the region.
