AD Ports, Adani Ports JV acquires stake in Tanzanian container terminal for $39.5 million

The acquisition is anticipated to be finalised by the end of June.

AD Ports Group has partnered with Adani International Port and East Harbour Terminals Limited to establish East Africa Gateway Limited (EAGL), headquartered in KEZAD, Abu Dhabi. This new joint venture, with AD Ports Group holding a 30% stake, has collectively acquired a 95% share in Tanzania International Container Terminal Services Ltd (TICTS) from Hutchison Port Holdings Limited, Hutchison Port Investments Limited, and Harbours Investment Limited, for a total of $39.5 million. The acquisition is anticipated to be finalised by the end of June.

TICTS, which manages all port handling equipment and employs the workforce at Container Terminal 2 at Dar es Salaam Port, will continue to operate the terminal. Terminal 2, with an annual container capacity of 1 million TEUs, handled approximately 0.82 million TEUs in 2023, accounting for 83% of Tanzania’s total container volumes.

Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, Managing Director and Group CEO of AD Ports Group, stated, “Our partnership with Adani Ports and East Harbour Terminals Limited marks the beginning of a broader collaboration in Tanzania. Together, we aim to explore further investment opportunities within the country.”

He added, “Through such strategic partnerships, we aim to leverage our combined know-how and expertise to develop infrastructure in Tanzania, support its economic growth, and increase its competitiveness globally.”
