Careem Invests in Swapp to Revolutionize UAE Car Rentals

Careem secures stake in Swapp to expand flexible mobility, tapping into UAE’s $175M car rental market by 2025.

Careem, a leading player in the Middle East’s mobility sector, has recently picked up a minority stake in Swapp, a UAE-based digital car rental platform. This move is aimed at expanding Careem’s flexible transportation offerings across the region. The partnership promises a range of services, from on-demand and subscription car rentals to a lease-to-own option, providing users with the ability to verify vehicles instantly, enjoy quick one-hour delivery, and even track cars in real-time. It’s a push towards convenience-driven mobility that’s reshaping how people move about, especially in urban settings.

Swapp, which became part of the Careem app in 2022 under its Careem Car Rental service, significantly boosted the options available for mobility within the UAE. This new investment should offer even more to customers, allowing them to easily swap rentals or move into ownership at their discretion—essentially adding layers of flexibility that align with changing consumer preferences.

Swapp’s CEO, Uzair Moosa, shared that being integrated into the Careem ecosystem has been a game-changer. It has not only connected thousands of customers but also offered a seamless experience with cost-saving options that many have welcomed. Moosa hinted at future expansions and enhancements, revealing plans to introduce longer-term rental deals and even faster fulfillment.

The partnership is seen as a strategic step by both companies to tap into a rising demand. As Adeeb Warsi, Careem’s COO, pointed out, there’s increasing appetite for flexible, affordable transport solutions. He praised Swapp for bringing high-quality vehicles and a streamlined digital experience to Careem’s clientele.

As the market for car rentals in the UAE expands, projections indicate a revenue of $175 million by 2025. The car rental sector in the region is on track for a steady growth rate of around 4.96% annually through 2030, with online sales predicted to dominate this growth—potentially accounting for nearly 87% of the total market by then.

The partnership between Careem and Swapp thus taps into significant market potential at a time when digital integration and convenience have grown into critical factors for consumers. The digital experience leveraging technology like real-time tracking and fast service delivery could potentially redefine car rental services not just in the UAE, but across other Middle Eastern markets.
