Red Sea Global (RSG) is advancing in sustainable development through its landmark tourism projects, The Red Sea and AMAALA, at a time when the Kingdom is restructuring its fiscal policy approach.
Significant Milestones for Vision 2030
The project is pivotal in Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 initiative.
The organisation attained significant milestones, securing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certifications, underscoring its commitment to sustainable architecture and operations.
The Red Sea International Airport is now the first Saudi airport and one of only five globally to achieve LEED Platinum certification, the highest recognition for environmentally friendly design and operation. This certification acknowledges RSI’s use of renewable energy, advanced energy efficiency technologies, and sustainable aviation fuel for seaplane operations.
RSG’s Central Distribution Centre also earned a LEED Gold certification, marking it as one of the most sustainable warehousing operations in the Middle East. Intelligent energy management and resource optimisation are key features of this facility, spanning more than 55,000 square metres.
AMAALA’s first LEED accolade also came in, achieving Platinum for Communities planning and design. This places it among an exclusive group of global projects recognised for excellence in sustainable urban development.
Sustainability at a Necessary Time
The development comes as the Kingdom loosens Saudi capital markets in a bid to attract FDI beyond the GCC.
Earlier this week, the Kingdom announced a permanent restructuring of the NEOM project in addition with the Mukkab project in Riyadh. The Mukkab was planned to build a 400-metre cube skyscraper, part-and-parcel of the Kingdom’s megaproject focus.
The Kingdom is refocussing fiscal priorities, moving away from megaprojects, instead focussing on realistic diversification goals via the 2030 Expo, the 2034 World Cup, and the Diriyah cultural project.
Hospitality Meets Sustainability
The Red Sea destination, central to Vision 2030, holds nine luxury hotels in operation and guests are now welcomed. Alongside RSG’s expansion, AMAALA will soon open as an ultra-luxury wellness destination, striving for a 30% net conservation benefit by 2040 through enriched biodiversity and habitat protection.
The resorts are designed to host up to 1.5 million annual visitors while operating on 100% renewable energy, aiming to cut emissions by eliminating up to 1 million tonnes of CO2 annually.
These efforts reflect a broader strategy to integrate sustainability and regeneration across all RSG operations, underlined by Group Chief Environment and Sustainability Officer Raed Albasseet’s commitment to positive environmental, social, and economic impacts.
