As a real estate expert and investor, I have seen many market trends come and go over the past few years. Smart home technology, however, is here to stay.

Smart homes are equipped with interconnected devices that can be remotely controlled and automated, offering convenience, energy efficiency, and security.

Integrating advanced systems and devices into residential properties is no longer just a trend; it is reshaping how we live, invest, and manage our homes.

The UAE, particularly Dubai, is embracing this technological wave quite quickly and is well on its way to becoming a global leader in home tech adoption.

Let’s look at the numbers. Recent reports by Statista suggest that the smart home sector in the UAE is projected to reach a revenue of $113.8 million by 2028 – driven by an annual growth rate of 10.49%.

The latest data from Samsung also revealed the growth of smart home services in the UAE, with more than 2.85 million registered users on their SmartThings app in the region and growing device ownership rates.

If you ask me about the most compelling aspect of smart homes, the first thing that comes to my mind is property values. They can increase significantly for properties with integrated smart technology.

This translates into higher returns on investment and potentially faster property sales – great news for those looking to buy or sell in today’s bustling market. The ability to control aspects such as lighting, heating, and security through a phone or voice assistant adds immense value to modern homes.

A top priority for homeowners is security, which can be enhanced through smart home automation systems. Smart locks, video doorbells, and motion sensors provide real-time alerts and remote access to the home’s security system.

According to experts from Dubai-based home automation company Dhaki, these features are a key selling point among residents in the region thanks to the peace of mind they offer – and they expect the demand to continue in 2025 and beyond.

Energy efficiency is another key aspect worth mentioning. Although it may seem like electricity consumption would be higher in these homes, the opposite is true.

Automated systems like smart thermostats and energy-monitoring devices can help reduce energy consumption by optimising usage based on occupancy and weather patterns. Fully automated smart homes can significantly reduce energy costs, as studied by Oxford Academic.

This lowers utility bills and contributes to a more sustainable living environment, which is becoming increasingly important to eco-conscious homeowners.

So, what does this all mean for homeowners and investors?

For homeowners, smart home technology offers a more convenient, efficient, and secure living experience. Energy savings and increased property values make smart homes a financially sound investment.

It’s no secret that the UAE’s real estate market is known for being innovative and luxurious, making it an attractive hub for international buyers seeking modern, high-tech homes.

The future of smart homes in the UAE is bright. The government’s commitment to innovation and infrastructure development is supporting the growth of smart home technology. At the same time, initiatives like the Dubai Smart City project aim to create a connected and sustainable urban environment.

We’re witnessing a new era of smart home technology, and I think we will continue to see a lot more of it in the coming years. From increased property prices and energy efficiency to convenience and security, we’re looking at an all-encompassing solution that brings long-term investment value.
