TA’ZIZ has awarded a $1.7 billion engineering, procurement, and construction contract to Samsung E&A to build the UAE’s inaugural methanol plant in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi. The facility will have a production capacity of 1.8 million tons per annum and is scheduled for completion in 2028. It will be powered by clean energy from the grid, aiming to be one of the world’s most energy-efficient methanol plants.

This project aligns with TA’ZIZ’s strategy to diversify the UAE’s economy by establishing new domestic chemical value chains. In its initial phase, TA’ZIZ plans to produce 4.7 million tons per annum of chemicals by 2028, including methanol, low-carbon ammonia, polyvinyl chloride, ethylene dichloride, vinyl chloride monomer, and caustic soda. Many of these chemicals will be produced in the UAE for the first time.

The methanol plant is part of a broader initiative to develop a world-scale integrated chemicals ecosystem in the Al Dhafra region.
