Morocco is set to allocate approximately MAD 8B ($850M) towards infrastructure development as part of preparations to co-host the FIFA World Cup in 2030.
This significant investment encompasses enhancements across airports, ports, roads and rail systems, reflecting the country’s strategic focus on improving its transport infrastructure ahead of the international event.
Abdessamad Kayouh, the Transport and Logistics Minister, detailed that nearly $4B had already been directed to 148 infrastructure projects in the previous year, with additional funds earmarked in the current year’s budget.
Morocco anticipates a substantial influx of visitors during the World Cup, hosted alongside Spain and Portugal.
Central to this development is a high-speed train line that will connect the country’s key northwestern cities along the Atlantic coastline: a project expected to significantly reduce travel times and enhance connectivity.
Kayouh noted that nearly 151 new projects, primarily focused on rail infrastructure, are anticipated to be finalised in 2024.
The Finance Ministry had previously announced cabinet approval for $41B in infrastructure spending in advance of the World Cup.
This extensive investment strategy aims to bolster various sectors, prioritising transport and logistics projects, with a focus on expediting airport expansions, enhancing the national airline’s fleet, and completing vital rail initiatives.
