Saudi Arabia’s sports market value to reach $22.4 billion by 2030

Saudi Arabia’s ambitious push into the global sports industry, spearheaded by its Vision 2030 strategy, has positioned the Kingdom as a major player on the international stage. According to a recent report by Surj Sports Investment, the Saudi sports market’s value reached $7.2 billion in 2023, up from $6.4 billion in 2022, with projections estimating growth to $22.4 billion by 2030. These investments underscore the Kingdom’s commitment to diversifying its economy and creating a sustainable sports ecosystem.

Economic and employment impact

The sports sector’s contribution to Saudi Arabia’s GDP has grown significantly, climbing from $2.4 billion in 2016 to $6.9 billion in 2023. This figure is projected to reach $16.5 billion by 2030, accounting for 1.5% of the GDP. The sector has also generated 14,000 jobs to date, with expectations for more than 100,000 positions in the next decade.

The Kingdom has allocated $2 billion annually to sports development, with $670 million directed toward supporting sports clubs in their privatisation efforts. Private-sector sponsorships have surged, reaching $320 million by 2023.

Football: Saudi Pro League clubs spent $957 million in 2023, ranking second globally in net transfer spending, only behind the English Premier League. The league also saw significant international signings, further elevating its global profile.

Esports: The Kingdom is rapidly emerging as a global esports hub, fueled by a $38 billion investment from PIF’s Savvy Games Group. The sector is expected to contribute $13.3 billion to GDP by 2030 and create 39,000 jobs.

Women’s sports: Female sports participation has grown 149% since 2015, with initiatives such as the Women’s Premier League and integrating sports into school curriculums contributing to this rise.

2034 FIFA World Cup hosting rights: The Kingdom secured the right to host football’s most prestigious event, solidifying its influence.

Plans include expanding its sports infrastructure with a $2.7 billion investment in new facilities by 2028 and hosting six international regional MMA leagues in partnership with PFL by 2026.
